Common Leys students support conservation efforts in South Africa

9th Sept 2025

Our Common Leys Farm students have just returned from the adventure of a lifetime in South Africa, where they spent two weeks immersed in wildlife, culture, and conservation at the renowned鈥Sibuya Game Reserve.

The opportunity, organised in partnership with鈥Gap Africa Projects, gave students the chance to step out of the classroom and into the heart of South Africa鈥檚 wilderness, an experience that proved both educational and unforgettable.

From the moment they arrived, the students were part of the action. They assisted veterinary teams in the care of giraffes, joined exhilarating game drives to witness South Africa鈥檚 most iconic wildlife up close, and even spent time with the鈥Anti-Poaching Unit (APU)鈥痶o understand the challenges faced in protecting endangered species such as rhinos.

For many, this was the most eye-opening part of the trip. Second-year Foundation Degree student鈥Sadie Walton-Hall explained:

鈥淗earing about the poaching crisis and speaking directly with the Anti-Poaching Unit gave me a much stronger understanding of the realities of conservation. It left a lasting impression and strengthened my determination to contribute to conservation efforts.鈥

The trip wasn鈥檛 just about observing but also contributing. Students rolled up their sleeves for vital conservation work, from removing invasive plants to maintaining fences and learning how these tasks help sustain the reserve鈥檚 fragile ecosystem.

There was also plenty of time for adventure, weekend excursions took them to鈥SANCCOB,鈥Monkeyland,鈥Birds of Eden, and鈥Tsitsikamma National Park. The group explored South Africa鈥檚 landscapes through kayaking and horse riding, enjoyed fishing trips, and spent evenings stargazing under the vast African skies.

Level 3 Animal Management student鈥Oryan Matheron鈥痳eflected on how the trip helped build friendships and long lasting memories:

鈥淚t was definitely a once-in-a-lifetime experience, a great way to see nature and animals at their peak while also bonding with people I didn鈥檛 know well before. The views, food, and accommodation were all excellent - it鈥檚 a trip I鈥檒l never forget.鈥

Beyond the wildlife, the group made a difference in the local community, supporting lessons at a nearby school and sharing experiences with the children. This gave them a first-hand understanding of how conservation, education, and community go hand in hand.

For some, it was the smaller details that made the trip feel truly special. Level 3 Animal Management student鈥疎lsa Moroney鈥痵aid:

鈥淭he forest camp had such a lovely atmosphere, and waking up to views over the river was beautiful. The staff were welcoming, the food was delicious, and I loved when we were able to make our own stew! I learned so much about the area and its incredible animals, and I would recommend Sibuya to anyone who wants an unforgettable safari experience.鈥

By the time they returned home, students had not only witnessed South Africa鈥檚 extraordinary wildlife but also developed new practical skills, confidence in field techniques, and a deeper appreciation for conservation and community.

For Sadie, some moments will stay with her forever:

鈥淕etting incredibly close to rhinos and elephants was unforgettable and witnessing a lion make a kill of a zebra was both shocking and rare. Moments like these gave me a profound appreciation for the beauty and unpredictability of wildlife.鈥

This unforgettable adventure highlights the value of experiential learning at 一起草官网, giving students the chance to broaden their horizons, make an impact, and create memories that will last a lifetime.
