Growing day by day: Horticulture Apprentices share their story

9th Jun 2025

Curious about what it鈥檚 like to be a horticulture apprentice? We spoke with some of our current apprentices to learn more about their day-to-day experiences, the skills they鈥檙e developing, and the advice they鈥檇 give to anyone considering following the same path.

馃尶 Talia at Cotswold Wildlife Park and Gardens

Firstly, we caught up with Talia, who is currently completing her Level 2 Horticulture Apprenticeship at the beautiful Cotswold Wildlife Park and Gardens; a large estate consisting of 160 acres that are filled with wildlife exhibits and gardens.

Why horticulture?

鈥淚鈥檝e always loved gardening and being outdoors,鈥 Talia shares. 鈥淒uring COVID, I opened my own coffee shop, but I realised I wanted a change. This role at Cotswold Wildlife Park was the perfect fit鈥攇reat location, ideal course length, and a subject I鈥檓 passionate about.鈥

Working alongside wildlife

鈥淓verything we do is focused on what鈥檚 best for the animals. If I notice the animals are stressed, I鈥檒l switch from using a noisy blower to a quieter broom. We also have a two-hour window in the morning to complete noisy tasks before visitors arrive. After that, it鈥檚 all about creating a peaceful, enjoyable experience for our guests.鈥

What鈥檚 the best part of the job?

鈥淒efinitely the people. It鈥檚 like a little community here鈥攅veryone is so friendly. And of course, working next to the animals is amazing."

馃尡 Tamara and Blake at Estelle Manor

At Estelle Manor, Grounds Apprentices Tamara and Blake are gaining hands-on experience across a wide range of horticultural tasks. The estate encompasses formal lawns and gardens, 20 acres of grassland, woodland, ponds and car parks. The team work together to ensure that the grounds are well managed and presented to the highest standards.

A typical day
Each morning begins with a team briefing, followed by grounds maintenance. Earlier in the year, the focus was on tree planting; more recently, mowing and working in the Walled Gardens has taken priority. Tasks include repotting, replanting, as well as contributing to larger projects.

Tamara鈥檚 proudest moment
鈥淚 was assigned to redesign a border. I had to lift and group plants by species鈥攊t was a fun and rewarding project. I鈥檓 still learning, but I get better each time.鈥

Blake鈥檚 biggest challenge
鈥淚 worked on a major hedging project around the new conference centre. Without a digger, I had to dig trenches by hand in the winter. It was tough, but I learned so much鈥攁nd it looks fantastic now."
